Flora and fauna

The variety of the relief, climate and vegetation predetermines the variety of the animal world on the municipality's territory. In the plain part, along the valley of the Maritsa river, in the corn and rice fields, the water rat and various species of mouse-like rodents live. The most widespread birds are the heron, the stork, the ibis, the golden eye and the green-headed duck; the most widespread fish id the carp. A rare representative of the Bulgarian fauna - the black stork - lives here. Heron colonies still live in the oak woods

Typical inhabitants of the water basins are the cormorant and separate fishing eagles. In the coniferous belts of the Northern Rhodopes, the woodcock, the hazel-hen and insect-eating birds (the tree-creeper, the three-toe woodpecker, the crossbill), various songbirds (finches, robins, wagtails, fly-catcher, thrushes, woodpeckers) and many others live. Of the large mammals, the deer, the roe, the wild boar and the bear live there, of the predators with valuable fur - various martens, and of the small mammals - various species of voles.

Protected Objects

The Chervenata Stena Biospheric Reservation

It was founded in 1962 on an area of 811.9 hectares, which was extended to 3029 hectares in 1990. It encompasses a territory with an altitude above sea level from 700 to 1500 m. it is guarded by the Assenovgrad Forestry. It is situated in the heart of the Dobrostan Massif in the Middle Rhodopes. 25 relict plant species grow in the reservation, especially interesting among whom are two orchid species.

The Topchika Cave

It is situated on the territory of the village of Dobrostan, in the Soushitsa area. its total area is 2.0 hectares, including1.5 hectares of rocks and 0.5 hectares of barrens. The remains of cave bears were found in it.

The Lale Bair area

It is situated on the territory of the town of Assenovgrad. Its area is 2.0 hectares. There is a habitat of the Rhodope tulip (Tulipa rhodopea) there. This Bulgarian endemic species of a local type has acquired the statute of an endangered species Bulgaria's Red Book.

An age-old forest of Austrian pine in the Ousoikata area

This plantation with an area of 4.0 hectares is about 200-220 years old; it has remained as an island among the karst stony terrain. It is situated on the territory of the village of Dobrostan

There are a total of 37 protected age-old trees on the municipality's territory.
