The municipality occupies the southeast part of the District of Plovdiv. It is situated along the two banks of the Assenitsa (Chepelarska, Chaya) River. It covers a small part of the Thracian Lowland to the north, and encompasses spacious areas of the Rhodope Mountains to the south, as a result of which a substantial part of the terrain is strongly indented and inclined. The municipality's territory is 615 sq. km. That constitutes 10.3% of the District of Plovdiv's territory and 0.55% of the country's territory. It borders the municipalities of Rodopi, Laki, Banite, Parvomay and Sadovo.
The municipal centre - Assenovgrad - is the largest town n the Rhodopes and the second largest in the District of Plovdiv. It is situated at the foot of the mountain at an altitude above sea level about 220 m and is 19 km away from the town of Plovdiv, 85 km away from the town of Smolyan and about 180 km away from the capital Sofia.

Assenovgrad's heritage of culture and history

Assenovgrad is proud of its heritage of culture and history. The successful combination of the mountain with the plain, soft climate, the productive soil, so as the fact that here is the entrance of the most convenient passage in the Rhodopi mountains, connecting Tracia with the Aegean sea are the reasons for Assenovgrad and the region to be settled in the remote past.


Relax and Tourism

Situated at the foot of the Chernatitsa (Karabalkan) elevation, along the banks of the Chepelarska River, the beautiful Assenovgrad is a convenient starting point for a tour to the Western Rhodopes and especially to the Dobrostan Massif and Chernatitsa, which starts from Pamporovo and reaches the Thracian Lowland. There are beautiful caves, rock bridges and formations and natural phenomena along the age-old coniferous forests.


Protected Objects

The Chervenata Stena Biospheric Reservation was founded in 1962 on an area of 811.9 hectares, which was extended to 3029 hectares in 1990. It encompasses a territory with an altitude above sea level from 700 to 1500 m. it is guarded by the Assenovgrad Forestry. It is situated in the heart of the Dobrostan Massif in the Middle Rhodopes. 25 relict plant species grow in the reservation, especially interesting among whom are two orchid species.
